Photographing your little ones together can be such a beautiful way to preserve those memories of the bond between siblings and the precious moments of their early childhood. However, newborn & sibling photos can also be a challenging task as young children may be unpredictable and easily distracted.
As a professional newborn photographer in Melbourne this is an area I’m pretty experienced in. So, here are some tips for photographing your big babies and brand new baby:
Timing is key
It is important to choose a time of day when both siblings are well-rested and fed. A happy and comfortable baby & toddler is more likely to cooperate during the photoshoot. If possible, try to schedule the photoshoot around the kiddo’s nap times.
Choose the right location:
The location should be comfortable, safe, and free from distractions. A familiar and comfortable setting, such as the family’s home, can help siblings feel more relaxed and at ease during the shoot. The master bed is a good spot – lots of room on a big soft bed and usually plenty of natural light (this tip is later).
Use natural light:
Whenever possible, use natural light to create a soft and natural look to your photos. Find a big window and if possible hand some soft, flowy fabric to difuse the light (making a big soft box). Avoid using a flash as it can be harsh and unflattering, not to mention unsettling for baby.
Get big kids involved:
Involving siblings in the photos can make them feel special and excited to be a part of it. Encourage them to hold the baby, tickle (gently of course), sing to them, whisper, count fingers/toes, and make funny faces to help capture all those beautiful candid moments – and get ready to snap away!
Capture the details:
In addition to capturing the interactions between siblings, be sure to capture the small details of the baby, such as tiny toes wrapped in big kids hands, or get them nose to nose, these show how small and delicate they really are.
Be patient and flexible:
Young children can be unpredictable, so it’s important to be patient and flexible during the shoot. No body likes to forced to do anything, so take breaks if needed, and be willing to change your plans if the baby or big kids have had enough, you don’t want to cause any unnecessary stress for the sake of a few photos.
Have fun!
Remember to have fun and enjoy the moment. The photoshoot should be a fun and memorable experience for everyone involved. If you find anyone is getting upset, frustrated or overwhelmed. Take a break or call it a day. There will be plenty of oppertunies to capture these early days with your new addition, look for little moments throughout the day to take advantage and snap some memories.
Photographing big siblings and new baby can be a rewarding and enjoyable experience. By following these tips, you can create beautiful and lasting memories of this special time in your family’s life. AND dont forget to PRINT these photos – they are no good to anyone tucked away on your phone or hard-drive, make sure to enjoy them.
