Hey there, lovely families of Melbourne!
As a professional family and newborn photographer here in our beautiful city of Melbourne, I’ve had the immense joy of capturing countless heartwarming moments for families just like yours for over the last decade.
There’s something truly magical about freezing those precious smiles, tiny toes, and candid giggles in timeless photographs. And when it comes to photographing families with their little bundles of joy, well, let’s just say it’s an extra special kind of magic.
Today, I want to chat with you about preparing for a family photography session with your adorable baby. Whether you’re seasoned pros in front of the camera or this is your first time, these tips will help ensure your session is not just successful but also a whole lot of fun!
Timing Is Everything:
Babies have their own schedules, and I totally respect that! When scheduling your session, try to pick a time when your baby is usually well-rested and content. Studio sessions are generall held mid morning at around 10-11am, and again at 1pm (perfect for after nap time). Outdoor sessions are always held around an hour before sunset, this is to ensure that gorgeous golden light you see in those images, so be sure to plan your session location around what works best for your little one. A happy, relaxed baby makes for the best photos.
Keep It Comfortable:
Dress yourselves and your baby in comfortable, fuss-free outfits. Opt for soft, breathable fabrics and avoid anything too scratchy or restrictive. Remember, comfort equals stress fee times and lots of smiles! If you need guidance in the wardrobe department, be sure to checkout my what to wear series as well as the studio wardrobe!
Snacks and Supplies:
Just like adults, babies can get a little cranky when they’re hungry or uncomfortable. Bring along some of your baby’s favourite snacks, toys, blankets, or anything else that helps keep them happy and entertained.
I’ll always have a range of mess free snacks like popcorn and cracekers on hand at the studio for your little one they have get hungry.
Location, Location, Location:
Choose a location that’s not only visually appealing but also safe and convenient for your little one. Whether it’s a picturesque park, a cozy confines of the studio, or even a sunny spot on the beach, make sure it’s a place where your baby is comfortable and can roam freely and safely.
I have a list of prefered locations PERFECT for capturing wholesome family moments, which you’ll gain access to upon enquiry.
Go with the Flow:
Babies can be unpredictable, and that’s perfectly okay! Embrace the chaos, enjoy the spontaneity, and let your session unfold naturally. Some of the most beautiful moments happen when we simply go with the flow and let our little ones lead the way.
Get Silly:
Don’t be afraid to let loose and have some fun! Whether it’s making goofy faces, playing peek-a-boo, or singing silly songs, let your inner child shine through. Laughter is contagious, and it always makes for the most heartwarming photos.
If you can, make mental note of songs, games or quirky things baby loves before your session, as they may just come in handy on the day!
Relax and Enjoy:
Last but certainly not least, relax and enjoy the experience! Family photography sessions are all about capturing the love, joy, and connection that make your family unique. So, take a deep breath, soak in the moment, and let me do the rest.
Remember, the most important thing is to cherish these precious moments with your family. Whether your baby is flashing a toothless grin or snuggling up in your arms, these memories are ones you’ll treasure for a lifetime.
So, there you have it, my dear Melbourne families! With these tips in your back pocket, you’re ready to rock your family photography session with your adorable baby.
