Frequently asked questions
Most of my clients love to come in as close to bubs birthday as possible, even to capture baby ON their special day – which makes it extra special!
However some parents decide to come in a little earlier so they can use their gorgeous birthday portraits for birthday invitations or decorations for the big day (3-4 weeks early).
Cake Smash Sessions are held Tues – Sat at 10am or 1pm and are scheduled around baby’s nap time.
As soon as you decide to work with me and know whether you want the session on Baby’s birthday or earlier. Its best to book well in advance as I only book a limited amount of sessions per month and they fill rather fast.
Cake Smash sessions are fast paced as baby can get ‘over it’ pretty quickly. We’ll take a few shots clean before the cake indivually, with siblings & family, then we get messy with cake, then we’ll have a splash in the tub for some fun action shots at the end. All this usually takes between 45-90 minutes, depending on baby’s mood and cooperation.
Clothing choices for babies session is usually simplistic, ensuring your darling is the main focus of my work. I have a range of outfits available for use, but you are more than welcome to bring your own with you and we can decide what works best on the day.
I always encourage clients to bring any sentimental items they would like photographed with bubby (their favourite book, teddy, blanket etc.).
As for cake, I find simple is best – no bright bold colours, pastel tones always look best and compliment their delicate little features.
Upon booking you will receive my welcome guide packed with information to cover all your questions & ensure you are prepared & get the best out of your session.
If you havent noticed by my work already, I’m very much drawn toward more simple and timeless sets and the families that come to see me seem to feel the same way.
When the set is simple, the focus becomes your baby: their expressions, movements, and all the little details that you’ll want to remember forever.
By removing all distractions, apart from a few balloons or a sentimental teddies or blanket, the images from your session then become timeless, no trends or fads – you can print them and they will display well in any room of your home.
Most families will add on a custom cake ($50), where I arrange all the details and all you have to do is show up! Sounds nice, right?
Don’t forget to bring the cake! Or I can handle that too (+$50), all I need to know is colour scheme & allergy advice.
If you choose to bring your own cake, I do have a few tips for ordering:
- taller is better than wider
- try to stay away from chocolate cake as it can photograph as dirt or poop!
- same thing for red – avoid! Looks like blood when your baby is covered in red icing!
- 4-6 inches in diameter is plenty big enough
- ask for buttercream on the outside because it’s easier for little fingers to get into than fondant is
- some bakers will make the sponge layers airier and lighter so that the cake is easy for little fingers and mouths to eat, and some will also use less sugar
